Understand your needs
“Let's face it, a nice creamy chocolate cake does a lot for a lot of people; it does for me.”
Audrey Hepburn
Despite what Audrey said, it’s not really about taste. Yes it helps if the food you store in your home tastes good, and even better if it is something you already like eating, but the main concern here is getting enough energy, fat, protein, sugar, salt as well as vitamins and minerals each day from whatever you decide to store. But to do that effectively you need to know what your bodily requirements are.
In the complete absence of food, you can survive (although not thrive) for a couple of weeks on average. Your body will start to use up glycogen stored in your muscles and liver first to provide you with energy. Then when that is all used up, after a day or two on average, your body will begin to metabolise your fat store through a process called ketosis. Although this is effective, its not quite as efficient as using sugars like glycogen, so you’ll start feeling tired, lethargic and generally miserable at this point. When your fat stores are almost depleted, your body in its desperate drive to survive, will start breaking down your muscle into protein. At this point you will become physically weaker, and considering your heart is comprised of protein, you may suffer severe health consequences as a result. Your opportunities and ability to search for and obtain food in this state, will be next to zero. That’s not a position you want to be in. Ever. Brexit or no Brexit.
So it is probably wise to store up maybe three or four weeks of foodstuffs in your home. In the unlikely event that food supplies are compromised for this long, you will be sitting pretty. And if food supplies aren’t compromised at all by Brexit, you have been able to exercise the art of preparation- and you can always donate some of your supply to charity once it becomes clear that all is well with food availability in your locale. You may, however, wish to continue a small store of food items regardless- just in case.
So, what do you need?
On average, an adult human requires around 2000Kcal of energy each day. This should be made up of around 70g of fat (including ideally less than 20g saturated fat), at least 260g of carbohydrate, less than 90g of sugar, 50g of protein and around 6g of salt. In addition, you will need to obtain the adequate recommended daily amounts of vitamins and minerals- some of which will occur naturally in the foods that you store.
